New Rumors: Sony FX3 II to Replace Both FX3 and a7S III ?

Sony FX3

According to latest rumors, Sony appears poised to shake up its cinema camera lineup with the introduction of the FX3 II, a sequel to the popular FX3 model from 2021. Rumor has it that the FX3 II will effectively replace not only its predecessor but also the acclaimed a7S III mirrorless camera, signaling an end to further development of Sony’s a7S series going forward.

The ambitious FX3 II looks to bridge the gap between the FX3 and the high-end Venice cinema camera. Most notably, it is speculated to feature a global shutter, eliminating the rolling shutter distortion that can affect fast-moving subjects or pans. This would give the FX3 II much more usefulness for professional video applications. The global shutter would come alongside a modest 12.9MP resolution, optimized for 4K video and stills.

Additional video specs are said to reach up to 4K resolution with an impressive 180fps for silky smooth slow motion. The FX3 II will remain fanless like its predecessor as well, allowing for silent operation during filming. It will lack an integrated EVF but have an optional EVF accessory available.

With the long-rumored camera expected to replace Sony’s most video-centric mirrorless model, the a7S III, it seems the company is transitioning its videography focus to the Cinema Line. This leaves questions about the future of a successor in the a7S line, which may be discontinued.

While details remain unconfirmed by Sony, rumors point to a potential announcement of the FX3 II by the end of March 2024. The speculated specs position it as a highly promising hybrid camera that looks to expand the Cinema Line into new imaging territories once reserved for the a7 series.
