Sony FX50 Rumored to be Announced Next

Sony FX6

Sony appears to be preparing to announce the next camera in their digital cinema line, the ILME-FX50. According to recent leaks and insider reports, this new Super 35mm cinema camera will share a similar form factor to the highly popular ILME-FX6 while adding several key upgrades for video professionals.

The FX50 looks to build upon the foundation of the FX6 with enhancements like 8-speed in-body image stabilization and an electronic variable neutral density filter. These additions will allow for smoother handheld footage and more flexibility for adjusting exposure while shooting.

One of the most exciting rumored features is 4K resolution recording at up to 120 frames per second. This high frame rate capacity at 4K would enable beautiful slow motion capture. While the official resolution has not been confirmed, early reports indicate it will meet or exceed the FX6’s 6K sensor, which oversamples for outstanding 4K video.

There is a possibility that the FX50 may reuse the same sensor as the ILME-FX30 cinema camera that Sony announced last year. However, some speculation points to a variant of the 26.2MP quad-bayer sensor found in Fujifilm’s recently released X-H2 mirrorless camera. This would still allow oversampled 4K video with a wide dynamic range, but in a more compact sensor size compared to the FX6.

Additional rumblings indicate the camera will have auto focus enhancements for smoother focus transitions and rack focusing while filming. The body is expected to use Sony’s E-mount system for interchangeable lenses just like existing FX-series cameras.

While not yet confirmed, early reports put the possible announcement of the FX50 in late 2023 with availability in 2024. The launch would align with NAB 2024 where Sony could showcase this video-centric mirrorless camera to the broadcast and filmmaking industry.

Considering the popularity of the FX6 for documentaries, indie productions, music videos and more, the FX50 looks to up the bar once again. The leaked specs suggest it will be an extremely capable cinema camera in a portable form factor. The reported upgrades to stabilization, ND filters and high frame rate 4K recording would appeal to video content creators who need to capture smooth, professional-grade footage on the go.

Sony has not officially commented on the FX50 rumors. But if the reports hold true, they have a compelling Super 35mm cinema camera launch that will undoubtedly attract plenty of enthusiast and professional filmmakers in 2024. Stay tuned for more leaks and hopefully an official announcement from Sony soon.
